The Logistics of Moving to Belgium

When I finally had collected, signed, stamped, and copied all of the necessary documents the fog cleared to reveal other monsters. Our original plan of getting a shipping container to move some basic pieces of furniture and bikes, quickly divulged to shipping some extra boxes as plane cargo, which then melted into a master plan to stuff everything that I wanted to bring into two large suitcases and a bike box, each weighing exactly 50lbs or less. In the end this approach made the most sense given our situation for several reasons.

First and foremost it was by far the most inexpensive option. Each of the first two choices looked like it could very quickly stack up to several hundred or even thousand dollars. Secondly, after some research we discovered that fully furnished apartments are quite common and affordable in Brussels, thanks to the high turnover of inhabitants. This really left no reason to lug over any furniture or cookware. Thirdly, one might be impressed how efficiently space can be used with some vacuum-pack bags and creative organization. And finally, Brussels appeared to be very mover friendly with two large IKEA stores located a metro ride from the city center. Perfect!
